Volunteers are the heart of all ATC events. Listed below are the various volunteer opportunities available for the 2008 AJC Peachtree Road Race. Please click on the links below to get position details. Thanks for all your help!

Position:  Course Monitor

Description: Assigned a designated area to monitor along the course.  Responsible for keeping the course safe for the runners (running area clear of pedestrians, spectators, cars, etc.  Each monitor is provided an orange safety vest and a small caution sign on race day.  The safety vest must be worn, and the caution sign is used to alert oncoming traffic and pedestrians of your presence.  In case of an emergency, course monitors should contact the crew chief in that designated area.  Enjoy yourself and cheer on the runners as they go by! 

Coordinator: Crew Chief in that specific area.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Course Monitors meet at a predetermined location on the course on race morning.  Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Course Monitors will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Medical—RN

Description: Assess & monitor runners experiencing acute health care problems near, at or after the finish line.  Work collaboratively with physicians to assure rapid re-mobilization of runners or referral for further treatment, as indicated.  Requires licensure as Registered Nurse in Georgia.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th, plus 1 hour pre-race meeting to brief on protocols/assignments.

What to wear: Medical singlet will be provided on race morning.  Dress for weather.  Wear comfortable shoes that you do not mind getting muddy.  Fanny pack for personal belongings, etc. recommended, as there is no place to secure purses, etc.  Volunteer T-shirt will be provided when medical singlet is returned.


Position:  Aid Station Load & Delivery Volunteer

Description: Pick-up and deliver supplies to each aid-station. Enjoy yourself!

Coordinator: Aid Station Load & Delivery Crew Chief

Time Commitment: A maximum of 6 hours on race morning, July 4th.   Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Aid Station Delivery volunteers will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position:  Finish Line Area – Chip Retriever

Description: Retrieve the timing chip from the runner's shoe after he/she finishes the race.  Place chip in bucket and return all chips to Crew Chief when chip bucket is full. 

Coordinator: Chip Retriever Crew Chief

Time Commitment: A maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Reports to volunteer check-in at finish area.

What to wear: Chip Retriever volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt but will be asked to wear a chip retriever t-shirt on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position:  Expo Volunteers 

Description: Set-up and staff the ATC booths at the Expo.

Coordinator: Expo Crew Chief 

Time Commitment: Expo is July 2nd and 3rd.  Each volunteer would be asked to work an AM, Mid, or PM shift. Each shift lasts 3-4 hour hours.  Reports to Expo Crew Chief at Grand Hyatt Hotel

What to wear: You will be provided with a volunteer t-shirt to be worn during your shift(s). Wear comfortable shoes because you will be on your feet. 


Position:  Runner Control Volunteers

Description:  Show runners where to go on race morning.  Line up the runners in their designated areas, and clean up the area after the race begins. Enjoy yourself!

Coordinator: Runner Control Crew Chief

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Runner Control Volunteers will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position:  Traffic Control Volunteers

Description:  Provide traffic control, direct runners to the start, and clean up the area after the race begins. Enjoy yourself!

Coordinator: Traffic Control Crew Chief

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th. Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Traffic Control Volunteers will be provided a volunteer t- shirt to wear on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Timers 

Description: Call out splits along the course. 

Coordinator: Timer Crew Chief

Time Commitment: A maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th. Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Timers will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Communications - Amateur (Ham) Radio Operators

Description:  Amateur (Ham) Radio Operators provide a layer of communications.  The primary concern of the ham radio traffic is to handle medical and course logistics communications, as well as in the event of an emergency or other unusual circumstances.Coordinator: Committee Member

Time Commitment: A maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

Equipment Commitment: Supply your own radio equipment (usually HT) and accessories appropriate to your assignment.

What to wear: Amateur Radio Operators will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.


Position: Finish Area Security Volunteer

Description: Monitor designated area for problems, answer directional questions, ensure that runners and spectators are able to get to where they need to be without interfering with the race. 

Coordinator: Finish Area Security Crew Chief

Time Commitment: A maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.   Report to finish area on race morning. Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear: Finish Area Security Volunteers will be provided a volunteer t-shirt but will be asked to wear a security t-shirt on race day. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Office Help

Description: Possible duties include: Peachtree application data entry, mailings, phone calls, proofing data, etc.

Coordinator: ATC Staff

Time Commitment: As available.

What to wear: Data Entry volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt. 


Position:  Grady Parking Volunteers

Description: Verify that all cars entering the parking lot are permitted to park in the lot. 

Coordinator: Grady Parking Crew Chief

Time Commitment:  Required to work as early as 4:00am and finish approximately three hours later on race morning, July 4th.

What to wear:  Grady Parking Volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day.  Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Finish Area - Fluids Volunteer

Description: Responsible for setting up and maintaining fluid station area.  Fluids are water, Coke and Powerade.

Coordinator: Finish Area – Fluids Crew Chief

Time Commitment:  Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear:  Finish Area – Fluids Volunteer will be given a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day.   Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 


Position: Finish Area – T-Shirt Distribution Volunteer

Description: Responsible for setting up and distributing t-shirts to runners. 

Coordinator: Finish Area – T-Shirt Crew Chief

Time Commitment:  Maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.  Crew Chief will provide specific meeting time and location.

What to wear:  Finish Area – T-shirt Distribution Volunteer will be given a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 



Position: Course Practice Water Volunteer

Description:  Sets up water station on site and breaks down.

Coordinator: Course Practice Water Crew Chief

Time Commitment:  Maximum of 3 hours on a given weekend.

What to wear:  Course Practice Water Volunteer will be given a volunteer t-shirt to be worn while working.


Position:  Start Water Volunteer

Description: Set-up, maintain, and clean-up aid station. Enjoy yourself!

Coordinator: Start Water Crew Chief

Time Commitment:  A maximum of 5 hours on race morning, July 4th.   Report to Start Volunteer Check-in at the Lenox Mall parking lot.

What to wear: Start Water Volunteers will be provided a volunteer t-shirt to wear on race day. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
