The Atlanta Track Club, organizer of the AJC Peachtree Road Race which takes place every year on the Fourth of July, announced that it will use an online lottery system for entry into the 2011 event, and that it will be increasing the event’s capacity for the first time since 1998 from 55,000 to 60,000 participants. With the online registration slots for the 2010 event filling in just four and a half hours, the Atlanta Track Club made the decision to move registration to an online lottery to establish a fair registration process for entrants. Those wishing to participate in the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race can register for the lottery online at ajc.com/peachtree any time during the 10 day period from 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 to 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2011. Regardless of the day or time one enters, all individuals and groups who enter the lottery during the 10 day period will have an equal chance of being selected for the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race. Entrants will be randomly selected after the lottery closes on March 24. All lottery entrants will receive an email by Tuesday, March 29, 2011 informing them of whether or not they were selected for the 2011 event. Searchable results of the selection process will also be posted on peachtreeroadrace.org and ajc.com/peachtree on the 29th.
“Over the past few years, we’ve seen running events throughout the country experience a surge in popularity and demand, and the AJC Peachtree Road Race is no exception,” stated Tracey Russell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Track Club and Race Director for the AJC Peachtree Road Race. “It is our hope that the new lottery process along with increasing the event capacity to 60,000 participants will provide a fair and less frantic registration system that allows more runners and walkers to be a part of this fun and festive Atlanta Fourth of July tradition.”
To accommodate those who enjoy participating in Peachtree with family and friends, the new registration system will allow for up to 10 people to enter the lottery as a “Group”. During the selection process, if a “Group” is selected, everyone in the group will receive entry into the event. On the contrary, if a “Group” is not selected, no one in the group will receive an entry. Those entering the lottery as a “Group” will have an equal opportunity of getting into the event as those who enter as individuals. Entrants who enter the lottery and are not selected for the event two years in a row will receive guaranteed entry into Peachtree the following year.
As in years past, Atlanta Track Club members will continue to receive an early and guaranteed entry opportunity into the AJC Peachtree Road Race provided their memberships are current as of February 28, 2011. Special consideration will also be given to “streakers” – those who have participated in 10 or more Peachtrees – when they register through the new lottery system.
The 42nd running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race will take place on Monday, July 4, 2011. Entry into the 10K event is $33. Given the success of the 2010 Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo, 2011 participants will again have the opportunity to pick up their number on Saturday, July 2 or Sunday, July 3 at the Expo or pay a $7.50 convenience fee to have it mailed.
