With five athletes in the professional field bringing 10K personal bests faster than the course record, history could be made in the first year of a new title partnership for the 57th Running of the Northside Hospital Peachtree Road Race on July 4.
Kicking off Atlanta's celebration of our nation's 250th anniversary of its independence, the world's largest 10K, with 56,000 participants, gets underway at 6:12 a.m. with the Shepherd Center Wheelchair Division, highlighted by eight-time Peachtree champions Daniel Romanchuk and Tatyana McFadden.
Headlining the men's field for the footrace is defending champion Patrick Kiprop, a 26-year-old Kenyan who returns to Atlanta on a hot streak after winning both the Bolder Boulder 10K in May and the B.A.A. 10K on June 21. Since winning here last year in his professional 10K debut after an All-American career at the University of Arkansas, Kiprop has finished no worse than second at the distance.
The fastest man in the field, however, is Nicholas Kipkorir of Kenya (26:51), currently ranked the #4 road racer in the world. The 2023 World Road Running Championships bronze medalist at 5K, Kipkorir placed fourth in the World Cross Country Championships in 2024 and is two-time Olympian, finishing fourth at 5000 meters in the 2020 Games.
Ethiopia's Tadese Worku (26:56) has also run faster than the Peachtree course record of 27:04, set in 1996 by Joseph Kimani. Worku finished fourth, just off the podium, in the World Cross Country Championships earlier this year.
They will all be challenged by Dawit Seare (Eritrea, 27:21), fourth in the 2023 World Road Running Championships 5K; Hagos Gebrhiwet (Ethiopia, 27:57), the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist at 5000 meters; and Kenya's Alex Matata, ranked the #3 road racer in the world thanks in part to winning 11 of his 13 career half marathons. He is making his international debut at 10K.
Top Americans include Wesley Kiptoo, who won the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta earlier this year; Nathan Martin, winner of the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon; Ryan Ford, who set a huge PB of 59:48 while finishing sixth in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon in January; and 2021 Peachtree champion Sam Chelanga.
American Nico Young, previously announced, has withdrawn from the field.
Leading the way for the women is Ethiopia's Medina Eisa, whose 29:25 PB was the fastest 10K in the world last year. Currently ranked the #6 road racer in the world, she won the 2025 Great Manchester Run 10K over many of the best women in the sport, including last year's Peachtree winner, Hellen Obiri.
Also coming to Atlanta with PBs under the 30:22 course record set by Brigid Kosgei in 2019 are the #9-ranked Loice Chemnung (Kenya, 29:57), who was runner-up in the 2026 Boston Marathon with a 1:04:01 half marathon in Barcelona this February, the fastest in the world so far this year and the eighth-fastest all-time; and Irine Cheptai (Kenya, 30:16), the 2017 World Cross Country Champion who was runner-up here in 2022 and 2024.
Beating her by 1 second in 2024 was Kenya's Stacy Ndiwa, who returns after breaking the tape that year in her Peachtree debut.
Challenging them all will be Ethiopia's Tsigie Gebreselama, ranked #4, who is the 2023 World Cross Country Championships silver medalist. She has run two of the five-fastest half marathons in the world this year and was second at the recent New York Mini 10K.
Among the Americans hoping to challenge them are Carrie Ellwood, the 2025 USATF Champion at both 25K and Cross Country, and Katie Izzo, who competed for Team USA at the World Cross Country Championships earlier this year and won the Delightful Run for Women 5K on May 30.
In the wheelchair field, Romanchuk owns the course record of 18:11, set in 2019, and has never lost this race, going back to his Peachtree Junior win in 2016. Among his challengers are Josh Cassidy of Canada, a two-time Peachtree champion (2010, 2013); Geert Schipper of the Netherlands, a two-time Paralympic medalist in triathlon; and Aaron Pike of the U.S, a six-time Paralympian, winter and summer.
McFadden, the most-decorated U.S. Paralympic track and field athlete in history with 22 medals; will be racing here for the 13th time. She will face fellow Americans Kendall Gretsch, a four-time Paralympic gold medalist in Nordic skiing and triathlon; and Emelia Perry, a 2024 Paralympic triathlete who finished third here last year.
Four-time defending champion Susannah Scaroni is expecting her first child and will not defend her title.
The event will be live-streamed on AJC.com and the AJC's YouTube channel beginning at 6 a.m., with Carrie Tollefson, Ed Eyestone, Sharon Reed and Amanda McGrory leading the broadcast team.
