PHOAA's Path to the Past A Historic Walk/Run
| In the mid-1890's the African American community in College Park, GA flourished within a vibrant one square mile enclave west of Main Street. This neighborhood buzzed with life and energy, characterized by its bustling streets lined with thriving businesses, homes, schools, and churches evident of the community's spiritual backbone, and a strong sense of camaraderie among its residents. The community was a testament to resilience and creativity, where families built a self-sustaining economy amid the harsh realities of segregation. However, the tide turned dramatically between the late 1970s and the late 1990s, as land was acquired by the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport. The event marked the heartbreaking uprooting of a close-knit community, as families were displaced, homes, schools, churches, and businesses razed to make room for airport expansion that never occurred. Today the echoes of this once vibrant community linger in the air, evident in the few remaining structures that stand as silent witnesses to its history. Among the last remaining structures in our community are Price Barbershop and its neighboring house, both approaching their 100th anniversary. PHOAA is pursuing the designation of these iconic landmarks as historic sites. By restoring them, we can create a dynamic museum that not only draws tourists but also serves as an invaluable resource for educating future generations about the rich history of the vibrant African American community that once flourished in College Park, GA. Preserving these buildings is not just about honoring the past; it's about inspiring a deeper understanding of our heritage and cultural legacy. Sadly, the cherished landscape of our community will reach its demise once the initial 6 West development begins in November 2025. Preserving the history of the "One Square Mile" community is not just important-it's imperative. We have a unique opportunity to document our community's stories and celebrate its rich heritage through the interactive Path to the Past Historic Walk/Run Event scheduled for September 27, 2025 7AM-2PM. This event will occur in Wards 1&2, allowing participants to walk/run the streets that hold our collective memories while in its original landscape, share those stories with one another, and foster a deeper connection among all participants. PHOAA, Inc. is a nonprofit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3).
