Atlanta Track Club has selected 25 nonprofit organizations and neighborhood associations to participate in its 2013 Adopt a Marathon Mile program during the Atlanta Marathon, 10 Mile, 5K presented by American Family Insurance and Kids’ Fun Run on Sunday, October 27. Organizations will “adopt” a mile along the route in exchange for a donation from Atlanta Track Club. Up to $187,500 will be awarded among the participating organizations.
This year, organizations were selected based on their work to improve health and fitness in the metro Atlanta community. Adopt a Marathon Mile organizations will provide volunteers to assist Atlanta Track Club at water stops along the marathon course, create “cheer zones” to motivate event participants and assist with cleanup efforts following the event.
“Atlanta Track Club is excited to partner with 25 fantastic organizations that are committed to promoting health and fitness throughout the metro Atlanta community,” said Sue Payne, director of community outreach and membership at Atlanta Track Club. “Giving back to the community we run through is one of Atlanta Track Club’s top priorities, and we are honored to be able to do this through our Adopt a Marathon Mile program,”
Organizations that meet the minimum requirements on the day of the event will receive a base donation of $3,500. Up to $7,500 can be earned by organizations that offer extra course support through the Adopt a Marathon Mile bonus points system. Points will be awarded based on categories including the number of volunteers, creativity at the cheer zone, support of runners and signage and promotion of the nonprofit, among others.
