Atlanta Track Club to Host First Group Run in America on Global Running Day

May 18, 2018 -- Atlanta -- Atlanta Track Club will celebrate Global Running Day by hosting the first group run in America at midnight on Wednesday, June 6. The Club is organizing a movie night under the stars as part of the celebration, showing a free screening of McFarland, USA at Buck Godfrey Stadium prior to the midnight run.

Atlanta Track Club will also host runs at 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. to celebrate Global Running Day. For the sunrise run, the Club announced that it will partner with Atlanta’s newly-formed chapter of the November Project and Big Peach Running Co., bringing together three major facilitators of health and wellness in the Atlanta area.

“We’re looking forward to a full 24 hours of running as we celebrate Global Running Day, said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club’s Executive Director. “The diverse selection of running opportunities on June 6 here in Atlanta is just one reason why we call ourselves Running City, USA. We celebrate fitness and civic pride not just on Global Running Day, but 365 days a year.”

Midnight Run

Global Running Day kicks off just a few hours after the conclusion of Atlanta Track Club’s All Comers Track & Field Meet, so the Club will offer runners the opportunity to stay at the track and socialize before and after a movie under the stars.

At 9:30 p.m., the Club will show McFarland, USA on the infield of the stadium and provide free popcorn, along with pizza for $1 per slice. King of Pops will also be onsite selling popsicles. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and their families to the screening. At midnight, the group will then take to the track for the first run in America on Global Running Day. Participants can run up to 5K.

Sunrise Run

Atlanta Track Club will lead its second run of the day in partnership with November Project and Big Peach Running Co. starting from Big Peach Running Co.’s Midtown location. The 6K run will bring runners through Midtown Atlanta, around Georgia Tech and back to Big Peach for post-run refreshments.

"We are thrilled to have all three of our organizations rally around our favorite activity on Global Running Day," said Mike Cosentino, who owns Big Peach Running Co. with Steve DeMoss. It has long been our mission to encourage more individuals to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle through running and walking.”

“The sunrise 6K is a staple among November Project’s 45 tribes around the world,” said Alexa Lampasona, who leads the Atlanta chapter with Christian Lopez. “It’s a way to challenge everyone to run their best time in a competitive fun, fun atmosphere. Just like any November Project workout, all levels and all ages are welcome.”

Lunch Run

At noon, the Club invites all of its neighbors at Armour Yards, and the greater Atlanta running community, to get active on their lunch break with a run at Atlanta Track Club’s office. The group will run loops around Armour Drive, meaning participants will be able to pick their distance as they break away from their desks at lunchtime.

Powerade All-Metro Track & Field Banquet

The Club’s celebration of running at all levels continues that evening, as it hosts the Powerade All-Metro Track & Field Banquet. This banquet, Atlanta Track Club’s longest-running event, honors the top high school track & field athletes in the metro Atlanta area and fittingly coincides with Global Running Day each year.
