Welcome everyone! The first book of Runners Who Read is A Beautiful Work In Progress by Mirna Valerio. This memoir captures Valerio's challenges and triumphs as a plus-sized ultramarathoner. We'll walk through the honest emotions, fatigue, focus, and more as we read about these extraordinarily long races and the time spent training in between. Those of you familiar with her Fat Girl Running Blog will recognize her casual first-person tone and sharp sense of humor as she leads us through her life experiences on and off of the ultramarathon course. However, aside from her candor and wit, I chose this book because I love the Valerio's message that running is for everybody and particularly every body and I think it's one that we can all relate to.
Running is an activity with an incredibly low barrier to entry and so many different spaces for people to participate. Whether you sprint, walk, jog, run, or anything in between, if you have a pair of shoes, there's a place for you in this community. As a result, one of the beauties of the sport is the fact that we welcome people from all walks of life. Valerio's book celebrates this aspect of the running community in sharing her unique path to becoming a successful athlete and encouraging others that they can do the same no matter what body they are in. That being said, let's start this discussion with some of the things that brought you to the running community.
